My Top 5 Tips to Improve Your Accent
These are my top 5 tips to improve your accent and become a more confident speaker. It’s difficult to improve your American accent. For some, it takes years of practice because just listening to Americans speak is not the fastest way to improve. However, it does not have to take that long. Many of my students improve in just weeks! Above all, you must be proactive and practice to improve your American accent and become a more confident speaker. These Top 5 Tips to improve your accent are just a start. If you’re looking for someone to partner with on your accent journey, I’d love for you to check out my story.
#1 Slow Your Rate
Slowing down your rate of speech gives your mouth more time to get where it needs to go. Your listeners will have a better chance of understanding you, and you will sound more fluent.
#2 Over Enunciate
Move your mouth more, or over articulate. This will feel like you’re overshooting your speech sound target, but trust me, you’ll be right on point. Your listeners won’t notice exaggerated movements, and will hear more precise speech.
#3 Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes
If you are afraid or embarrassed to make errors, you will miss opportunities to practice. Taking chances will make you more confident!
#4 Speak Louder
Stand up straight (or sit up), aim your voice at a far corner of the room and PROJECT your voice! This will make your message sound confident and help your audience to understand you better.
#5 Practice in the Mirror
When you watch your mouth make sounds the right way, you will remember what correct placement not only looks like, but feels like. Practice does make perfect!
These Tips are Just the Start
Remember, improving your American accent is a journey. All journeys take work. However, the work on your accent is an investment in yourself. I recommend 30 minutes of practice EVERY DAY. But this does not have to be done all at once. For instance, many of my students break this up into 10 minutes after breakfast, 10 minutes after lunch, and 10 minutes after dinner. As a result, practice fits into the small parts of your day. Before you know it, people will be commenting on how great you sound!
